Tanya’s Simple Homemade Hemp Milk Recipe & the Extraordinary Virtues of Hemp Seeds

Whether you’re dairy-free or not, most cow milks and non-diary milks are not so great for us. And they’re expensive! Especially some of the non-dairy versions, which promise a lot but deliver very little, other than a vegan alternative; which by the way, I fully support for health, environmental and humane concerns. So I do suggest them as the better alternative to commercial cow’s milk. But most are loaded with fillers and unhealthy oils, even the organic ones and have very little ‘almonds” or “oats” in them at all.

Enter Hemp milk! Not only are hemp seeds exceptionally nutritious but hemp is a complete protein - nearly 25% of calories derive from high quality plant protein - and it tastes great and is easy to work with. Also it’s very difficult to find store-bought organic hemp milk. And, it might be the simplest of non-diary milks to make at home. No straining! Win. Win. Win.

My hemp milk takes me less than 5mins to make, seriously. And it’s super customizable and flexible - exactitude is not required!

Here’s the recipe I get so many requests for - customize to your tastes.

3.5cups water

1/2 cup ORGANIC hemp seeds

2-4 dates, to your taste

1/4 tsp pink salt (higher in minerals, lower in sodium)

Approx. 1/2-1 tsp Pure vanilla extract (I recommend the one w/no alcohol, especially for kids)

BLEND IT UP. For about 1min. That’s it! No need to strain it but you will always want to shake before pouring. Stays fresh in fridge for about 6 days but I doubt you’ll have it that long. It’s so good, so nutritious and versatile!

OPTIONAL VERSIONS

  1. Add 1/4-1/2cup raw, organic cashews for creamer version and more nutrients

  2. Add approx 1/4-1/2cup coconut shreds. This version you may want to strain because the coconut leaves some texture which I don’t hate, but your choice.

  3. Add chocolate! You can add raw cacao for a chocolate milk version. So fun, right?!

  4. Sweeten with Monkfruit extract in place of dates for an even lower glycemic version. But dates are really nutritious and high in fiber, which is the #1 micro-nutrient most American’s are dangerously low in. Pure maple syrup is another sweetener option and high in minerals, but high in sugar too.
